Radiation and Propagation
Located on the Cité Descartes campus in Champs-sur-Marne, the "Rayonnement et Propagation" platform addresses phenomena linked to the propagation of radio waves in free space or in circuits and transmission lines. An essential support for R&D, it offers trainers, researchers and industrial partners the means for rapid prototyping, simulation and electromagnetic characterization of materials, antennas and, more generally, communicating systems.
In terms of facilities, the platform has three shielded anechoic chambers for electromagnetic testing in controlled environments. In detail, a small chamber is dedicated to characterizing UHF RFID tags in the 800-1000 MHz band, a near-field measurement chamber is dedicated to characterizing antenna radiation from 800MHz to 40 GHz, and a modular chamber enables propagation measurements (SER measurement, EMC measurement, electromagnetic energy recovery) and radio wave localization (RADAR MIMO). A mode-shuffling reverberation chamber (>500MHz) provides the statistical field uniformity required for electromagnetic compatibility measurements, antenna efficiency or material absorption characterization. These chambers can be instrumented with a range of equipment enabling the generation and analysis of specific waveforms up to 6GHz.

The platform in detail
The platform supports the research carried out for the ESYCOM laboratory's federating project, entitled "sensors and communicating systems for the city, the environment and the person". More precisely, it contributes to the study of antennae systems and propagation in complex environments. As such it allows the development of innovative experiments for the characterization of antennas and materials and for the design of communication systems in complex environments. For example, we can cite experiments conducted on the following topics: measurement of antennas in reverberation chamber, study of propagation channels near an interface and buried or surrounded antennas, detection and localization by MIMO radar, optimisation of the recovery of ambient electromagnetic energy.
A dedicated area for masters and engineering courses in the 3EA domain offers practical work for the acquisition of skills in the field of microwaves for the design, simulation and characterisation of components and communication systems.
In addition to industrial collaborations for applied research purposes, the platform offers services to any non-expert socio-economic partner in need of RF design and measurement skills. These services can range from the characterisation of materials or environment to the performance evaluation of communication systems, through the design of antennas and RF circuits.
